Espanhóis e portugueses iniciaram essa rixa logo após o descobrimento da América, quando dividiram suas terras no Tratado de Tordesilhas. Depois, com os países já independentes, a tensão entre as nações aumentou com a Guerra Cisplatina, quando Argentina e Uruguai se uniram para combater o avanço do Brasil na região do Rio da Prata. Um dos últimos momentos de tensão na história entre brasileiros e argentinos foi nos anos 70, durante a construção da Usina de Itaipu. Argentinos acreditavam que Buenos Aires poderia ser inundada completamente caso a usina fosse destruída.
